County Cork-based Barry O’Connor Transport Ltd has expanded its fleet with a new Volvo FH 540 Globetrotter XL 6×2 tractor unit. The truck, acquired for its performance and reliability, also serves as a tribute to the company’s founder’s late parents.
Supplied by McCarthy Commercials, the latest addition continues the company’s long-standing preference for Volvo. Owner Barry O’Connor, a lifelong fan of the brand, explains:
“I’ve been driving Volvos for years, and this is my second brand-new truck. Each one has impressed me, and they just keep getting better. The comfort is second to none, whether on smooth roads or tough terrain. Once you’ve driven a Volvo, nothing else compares.”
High-Spec Volvo FH 540 for Demanding Workloads
The new FH 540 is powered by a D13K Euro-6 compliant Step E engine, delivering 540 hp and 2,600Nm of torque. It features a 12-speed I-Shift transmission that optimises gear changes based on speed, weight, and road conditions.
The Globetrotter XL cab has been upgraded with leather upholstery and full air suspension, ensuring maximum driver comfort. The truck also sports Alcoa Dura-Bright alloys and Volvo’s signature V-shaped LED headlights, with a factory-enhanced paint finish in the company’s dark blue livery.
Operating six days a week from Crookstown, the FH 540 will cover approximately 135,000 km annually, handling bulk tanker deliveries, curtainsider transport, and flatbed operations.
A Personal Tribute to Family
Beyond its practical benefits, this Volvo FH 540 holds special meaning for O’Connor, who dedicates the truck to his late parents. His father, also a driver, imparted advice that remains central to his business philosophy.
“My father always said, ‘If you’re going to be a truck driver, make sure you get home to your family every night. If you can’t do that, the job isn’t worth it.’ That has stayed with me. I’ve built my business to ensure I’m home as much as possible, even when work is tough.”
Honouring his parents’ sacrifices and support, O’Connor sees this new truck as a testament to the values they instilled in him: hard work, family, and seizing opportunities.
