C J Hurford & Sons has taken delivery of the UK’s first Volvo FH Aero 8×4 Tridem tipper. The Bristol-based family business selected the fuel-efficient and highly manoeuvrable truck for its contract work with Dragon Asphalt.

Chris Hurford, owner of C J Hurford & Sons, explained the decision:

“Our fleet is mostly high-end kit, and we wanted something a little special again this time. It’s nice to know we have the first FH Aero tipper in the country.”

The Volvo FH Aero is powered by a D13K Euro-6 engine, delivering 540hp and 2,600Nm torque between 1,000 and 1,450 rev/min. The refined aerodynamic design reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to five per cent compared to a standard FH model. The inclusion of Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System (CMS), which replaces traditional mirrors, enhances visibility while further improving aerodynamics.

Hurford highlighted the importance of fuel efficiency:

“Fuel is the main cost for our business, so anything we can do to reduce that is a huge help.”

The truck, supplied by Russell Woof, Area Sales Manager at Truck and Bus Wales and West, features Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift gearbox with construction software for improved performance on challenging terrain. The Tridem chassis enhances site accessibility while minimising tyre wear.

“The turning circle of the Tridem is unmatched,” Hurford added. “You can get a 20-tonne payload into sites where usually only a six-wheeler can go.”

Built by George Neville, the tipper body has been finished with a custom paint job by Merlin Car & Commercials, with vinyl detailing by Naked Signs. Electrical installations were completed by RBF Auto Electricals.

The truck, expected to cover 80,000 km annually, is covered by a Volvo Blue Contract for preventative maintenance. C J Hurford & Sons operates 12 trucks, delivering asphalt and aggregates across the south-west.
