Birchanger Green Services sits at Junction 8 of the M11, where the motorway meets the A120 near Bishop’s Stortford and Stansted Airport. Operated by Welcome Break, it provides 24-hour HGV parking, fuel, showers, laundry facilities and one of the widest food selections found at a UK motorway service area.
Drivers can reach the site from either direction of the M11. Access is via Junction 8, which also handles A120 traffic heading to Stansted Airport. This makes Birchanger Green convenient but regularly busy. Congestion can build around the entrance, forecourt and internal roads, particularly during airport peaks and holiday periods.
HGV parking occupies a large area away from the main car spaces. The site was originally designed for around 75 trucks, although Welcome Break does not publish a current bay count. As with many older service areas, the layout can become untidy when the marked spaces fill and late arrivals start parking around the edges.
Parking is free for the first two hours. The current charge for an HGV staying for up to 24 hours is £40. Alternatively, drivers can pay £41.50 and receive two £6 food vouchers. That is a far better deal if you plan to eat on site, as the extra £1.50 buys £12 of food credit. There is no need to book in advance; drivers pay at one of the designated tills and enter the vehicle registration into the terminal.
Parking is controlled by ParkingEye. Drivers should retain their receipt and check that the registration has been entered correctly. Complaints about parking charges feature regularly in older online reviews, although many appear to involve drivers or motorists exceeding the free period without registering or paying.
Birchanger Green has a broader catering selection than most motorway services. Current outlets include KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell, Subway, Pret A Manger, Chopstix, Starbucks and The Good Breakfast. Waitrose and WHSmith cover sandwiches, snacks, drinks and essentials. Coffee remains available around the clock, while Welcome Break says at least one hot-food outlet should trade until midnight.
The Good Breakfast provides the closest option to a conventional truckstop breakfast, although this is still a motorway-service operation rather than an independent café. Prices reflect the location. Public reviews praise the choice but regularly criticise food costs, waiting times and inconsistent standards during busy periods.
Free showers and toilets are available, together with accessible facilities, baby changing, free Wi-Fi, cash withdrawals and a Revolution self-service laundry. There is also a hotel on site, plus indoor seating and a GameZone. Feedback on cleanliness varies sharply. Some visitors report clean toilets and well-kept public areas; others describe dirty washrooms and tables when staff struggle with heavy footfall.
The Shell forecourt operates 24 hours and is truck friendly. It supplies diesel and HGV AdBlue from the pump, accepts Shell and fleet fuel cards and has a cash machine. GRIDSERVE and Tesla charging is also available, although there is no electric HGV charging.
Birchanger Green offers most of what a driver needs during an overnight stop, but it is expensive and often crowded. The range of food, free showers and laundry are strong points. The airport traffic, dated layout and variable cleanliness are harder to overlook.
