Government support has been given to the next generation of the country’s workforce.
Companies hiring apprentices will be given increased incentive payments. It is hoped that the move will boost industries including transport and logistics.
Specifically, employers will now receive £3,000 for new apprentices.
Apprentices can be any age, but must join the company between 1 April 2021 and 30 September 2021.
In response to the announcement, the news has been welcomed by BIFA (British International Freight Association).
BIFA represents UK freight forwarding and logistics companies.
Carl Hobbis, BIFA’s executive director, said the move was a further reason for its members to consider apprenticeships.
He added that it was a means of “adding fresh talent to the industry”.
BIFA was involved in the creation of an International Freight Forwarding Specialist apprenticeship.
As a result, the organisation has committed to promote its availability since it was introduced in 2018.
“There are ten apprenticeship standards in the transport and logistics sector,” said Hobbis.
“The International Freight Forwarding Specialist apprenticeship is the only one with customs as a mandatory module.”
Meanwhile, BIFA director general, Robert Keen, was also appreciative of the news.
“Whilst our members are currently rightly focused on significant business continuity issues, we welcome the additional funding.
“We are ready to help any of our members that are seeking to take advantage of the additional funding.
Concluding, Hobbis emphasised the value of apprenticeships.
“For SMEs, the apprentice programme can cost as little as £450 per apprentice. That includes a BTEC qualification for the apprentice as well, which makes it great value.
