In its largest single order to date, Scania is delivering 100 liquified natural gas (LNG) trucks to Stavenhagen, Germany-based KP Logistik.
The Scania R410 tractor units will be evenly split between KP Logistik’s centres in Stavenhagen and Wustermark, near Berlin.
The trucks will be used for deliveries of dry, refrigerated and frozen foods.These will go primarily to retailers Netto’s and Norma’s stores in eastern Germany, including Berlin.
“With this strategic order for gas vehicles, we want to pioneer more sustainable transport and set a good example for the transport industry,” said David Brokholm, MD, KP Logistik GmbH.
“Carbon emissions from natural gas trucks are lower than from diesel. They are further reduced by up to 90 per cent if we use biogas.”
KP Logistik will also benefit from road toll exemption and subsidies on gas-powered vehicles that have been in force in Germany since the beginning of the year. These help offset the higher cost for gas vehicles.
“That made it much easier for us to opt for gas technology,” Brokholm said.
The new trucks will be operated in the fleet for four to five years, and will each cover up to 800,000 km.
