Yorkshire operator David Blockley and Son has taken delivery of a new Volvo FH16 Aero 780 6×2 Globetrotter XL, becoming the latest haulier to bring the Swedish firm’s flagship model into service.

Supplied by Crossroads Truck and Bus Area Sales Manager Jason Robinson, the Volvo FH16 Aero replaces an outgoing FH 540 previously used for livestock haulage in partnership with Fred Greenwood and Son.

The new 780 will be paired with a Plowman livestock trailer and is already in operation transporting cattle from Esholt, near Bradford, to farms across the UK.

David Blockley, Owner of the business, said: “I cut my teeth as an apprentice mechanic at Crossroads in 1973, so I like to think I know a thing or two about what makes Volvo such a strong brand.

“We’ve only had the FH16 Aero on the road a few weeks, but we’ve seen good MPG figures which are already better than those of the standard FH this truck replaced. We’re especially happy with that performance given how aerodynamically inefficient livestock trailers are by their nature and the fact that they’re never truly empty. We couldn’t be happier.”

Powerful Engine, Comfortable Interior

The Volvo FH16 Aero features the new D17 engine – the most powerful ever fitted to a Volvo truck – delivering up to 3,800 Nm of torque. It’s paired with a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission, offering improved drivability and strong engine braking at low speeds.

Key technical features include a single turbocharger for improved responsiveness and a wave piston design to optimise combustion and cut emissions. The engine is also equipped with an upgraded injection system and increased cylinder pressure for better fuel efficiency and performance.

The spacious Globetrotter XL cab has been finished in matching red and cream livery for both David Blockley and Son and Fred Greenwood and Son. Additional touches such as Dura Bright alloys complete the striking external appearance.

Inside, the cab includes Volvo’s Drive+ package, with electronic climate control, carbon filters, dual armrests, leather upholstery, a heated, suspended seat, and front air suspension for comfort.

Further enhancements come from the one-person Living package. This includes extra storage, bottle holders, a foldaway table, 33-litre fridge/freezer, and microwave – all designed to support drivers working long hours on the road.

Blockley added: “The Fred Greenwood and Son team are happy with how the truck performs, and especially with the cab itself. When someone’s spending long hours on the road, comfort, quietness, and ease of use become essential. This FH16 Aero ticks all the boxes.”

The vehicle is expected to cover 100,000km annually and will remain in the fleet for at least three years.

Founded in 1980, David Blockley and Son operates from Drighlington, West Yorkshire, providing vehicle maintenance and recovery services. The latest addition also continues a 50-year relationship between Fred Greenwood and Son and Crossroads Truck and Bus.
