The Chippenham Pit Stop lorry parking expansion has delivered clear operational and welfare benefits in its first year, following a joint investment backed by National Highways.

It has been just over 12 months since the Wiltshire site increased its overnight capacity from 89 to 152 spaces. The £2 million project, supported by £700,000 from National Highways, aimed to tackle a long-standing shortage of safe HGV parking along the M4 corridor. The results suggest it is doing exactly that.

Independent research by Transport Focus reports 95% customer satisfaction, pointing to strong uptake and improved driver experience. Over the same period, nearly 7,000 additional drivers have been able to park safely at the site instead of using lay-bys or unsuitable locations.

For an industry that has spent years complaining about a lack of facilities, this is one of the few examples where something has actually changed.

More space, fewer compromises

The addition of 63 spaces has eased pressure on a site that was previously full by early evening.

David Hatherell, Managing Director of Chippenham Pit Stop, said: “Before the extension it was widely known by members of the trucking fraternity that they needed to reach us before 6pm if they were to be sure of securing an overnight slot.”

He added that drivers can now arrive later in the evening and still find a space. “Drivers coming from the continent can make it to us around 10pm and still find a space.”

That alone removes a fair amount of stress from long-distance operations.

The Chippenham Pit Stop lorry parking upgrade has also introduced practical improvements beyond just space. Electric hook-ups for refrigerated trailers have allowed more than 100 units to operate without running diesel engines overnight.

That reduces noise, cuts emissions, and improves sleep quality. Not exactly revolutionary thinking, but clearly effective.

Security and booking improvements

An ANPR-controlled system has also been introduced, allowing drivers to pre-book spaces. More than 800 drivers have already used the system.

Hatherell said the changes give drivers “peace of mind that they have a safe, secure place to stop for the night.”

Security remains a persistent issue across the UK network, so even incremental improvements matter. Alongside the parking expansion, the site has upgraded its restaurant, kitchen, and washroom facilities. Additional overnight provision has also been added to support the increased capacity.

Hatherell acknowledged the previous limitations: “As a family business, we take enormous pride in the service and facilities we offer so when we were so often full in the past it was horrible to have to watch a disappointed driver leave.”

Public and private collaboration

The project is being held up as an example of how public funding and private operators can work together. Hatherell described the partnership as “an unqualified success,” noting that drivers have been the main beneficiaries.

National Highways appears keen to agree. Tim Holland, Principal Advisor at National Highways, said: “Keeping HGV drivers safe on our roads is extremely important to us. That’s why we set out a programme of funding to improve lorry park facilities across the country.”

He added: “Chippenham Pit Stop demonstrates the impact those improvements can have.”

Looking ahead

The next step is already being considered. The site is exploring additional electrical capacity to support future eHGV charging. Hatherell said the business is “actively seeking additional electricity capacity to facilitate E-HGV charging as and when hauliers make the switch.” Which is sensible. No point building capacity for diesel-era problems only to hit the same wall again in five years.

The Chippenham Pit Stop lorry parking project shows what targeted investment can deliver. It also quietly highlights how far the wider network still has to go.
