Bretts Transport has significantly reduced its carbon emissions, achieving a 27% reduction since 2022. The Cambridgeshire-based logistics firm operates over 80 trucks and manages 260,000 square feet of warehousing at its Guyhirn site.

Major Progress Amid Industry Challenges

The transport sector faces tough environmental targets. HGVs account for 6% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Road Haulage Association. Despite this, Bretts has achieved notable reductions.

Scope 1 emissions from fuel consumption have dropped from 7,391,260 kg of CO₂e in 2022 to 5,417,922 kg in 2024. Scope 2 emissions, covering electricity use, have increased slightly, reflecting greater electrification.

Investments in Sustainable Technology

In 2023, Bretts invested in 10 new 500 S Super 13-litre trucks with Euro 6-compliant engines, reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Additionally, the company replaced its forklift fleet with 13 all-electric Cat® Lift Trucks. This change is set to cut emissions by 139,266 kg of CO₂ annually.

The firm also implemented a new modelling strategy to streamline operations and reduce unnecessary mileage. This approach has cut emissions by 6%, with further reductions anticipated.

Commitment to Sustainability

Simon Brett, Managing Director at Bretts Transport, emphasised the firm’s commitment to environmental responsibility: “Sustainability isn’t just a box-ticking exercise for us; it’s a core element of our strategy. We’ve made meaningful progress, but there’s still much more to achieve.”

Future plans include installing solar panels at the Guyhirn site and continuing to modernise operations.
