The Volvo FH16 780 has entered service with The Sirius Group, marking the company’s first move into operating its own truck fleet.
The specialist contractor has invested in a Globetrotter XL 6×4 tractor unit to transport plant machinery across the UK.
Previously, the business relied on third-party haulage providers. The shift to in-house transport is designed to improve control and reduce costs.
Internal Transport Manager Paul Clarke said: “It was a strategic decision from the company directors to invest in our first truck to stop that flow of money heading out of the business.”
The Volvo FH16 780 will operate with a four-axle Faymonville low loader trailer. The trailer features a hydraulic widening bed for moving large and heavy equipment.
High power for heavy haulage
The Volvo FH16 780 is equipped with Volvo’s D17 engine, producing 780hp and 3,800Nm of torque.
This makes it the most powerful engine ever fitted to a Volvo truck. The setup is designed to handle demanding heavy haulage applications.
Power is delivered through a 12-speed I-Shift gearbox. The system includes crawler gears and a heavy-duty retarder to improve control at low speeds.
The truck is plated for 90-tonne operations. This suits the Sirius Group’s requirement to move heavy construction machinery.
Clarke said: “Our machinery is heavy-duty stuff, but the Volvo can easily handle whatever we throw at it.
“The driver absolutely loves it. Even with 44 tonnes on the back, it coasts up the hills without missing a beat.”
Engine and driveline efficiency
The D17 engine uses a single turbocharger to improve responsiveness. A wave piston design helps optimise combustion and reduce emissions.
An updated injection system and increased cylinder pressure support both fuel efficiency and power output.
These features combine to deliver performance while maintaining operational efficiency.
Driver-focused specification
Inside the Globetrotter XL cab, the Volvo FH16 780 is specified with driver comfort in mind.
Features include full leather trim, adjustable steering with neck tilt and advanced climate control systems.
Additional equipment includes a microwave and TV, reflecting the long-distance and heavy-duty nature of the work.
Externally, the truck is finished in Sirius Group’s black and green livery, with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloy wheels.
The vehicle is backed by a Volvo Gold Contract, providing maintenance support and uptime assurance.
Supporting a growing contractor
Established in 2003, The Sirius Group specialises in enabling works and brownfield development.
Its services include planning, geotechnical surveys, remediation, demolition and civil engineering.
The introduction of the Volvo FH16 780 represents a significant step in expanding its operational capabilities.
