A new Chippenham Pit Stop health campaign is encouraging UK truck drivers to keep an eye on their waist measurement as part of a push to improve driver health.
Drivers visiting The Chippenham Pit Stop, just off Junction 17 of the M4 in Wiltshire, are now being offered free paper tape measures. The initiative aims to help drivers check their waist size and understand the link between abdominal fat and long-term health risks.
The Chippenham Pit Stop health campaign targets drivers who spend long hours behind the wheel keeping the UK’s supply chains moving. The nature of the job often involves limited physical activity and irregular meal patterns, which can contribute to weight gain and related health issues.
Pit Stop Director and Health Campaigns Coordinator Lisa Hatherell said the campaign aims to give drivers a simple way to check their own health.
Carrying extra weight around the waist can mean there is too much fat around the internal organs. This increases the risk of high cholesterol and raised blood pressure. It can also increase the risk of developing type two diabetes.
The campaign encourages drivers to measure their waist and compare the result with their height using NHS guidance.
“So, our customers will be able take matters in hand immediately because they will find the free measures next to the hand dryers and on the door into the showers alongside a poster with a QR code accessing the NHS waist to height ratio tool,” said Hatherell, a former Bristol nurse.
“In general one’s waist should be less than half one’s height,” she added.
Simple check for drivers on the road
The Chippenham Pit Stop health campaign places the tape measures in areas drivers regularly visit, including the shower entrance and washroom facilities.
The aim is to make the check quick and easy for drivers passing through the site.
The poster displayed on site includes a QR code linking directly to the NHS waist-to-height ratio calculator. This allows drivers to quickly see if their measurement falls within the recommended range.
The Chippenham Pit Stop has built a reputation as one of the UK’s best-known truck stops. The facility regularly receives praise from the Road Haulage Association for its focus on driver facilities and customer care.
Alongside the new campaign, the restaurant continues to provide a range of healthier meal options for drivers looking for alternatives to traditional roadside fare.
Operators and drivers have increasingly highlighted the importance of better health support across the haulage sector. Long shifts, limited exercise opportunities and irregular schedules can all contribute to health problems among drivers.
Initiatives such as the Chippenham Pit Stop health campaign aim to raise awareness and encourage drivers to take small, practical steps to monitor their health while working on the road.
