Fleet charging specialist Fleete has secured planning consent for a 26-bay eHGV charging hub at Hams Hall Distribution Park in Coleshill, near Birmingham.
The new eHGV charging hub marks the company’s second shared site, following the launch of its 16-bay facility at the Port of Tilbury. Hams Hall sits within the UK’s so-called logistics “golden triangle”, with direct access to the M42 and key multimodal freight routes. It is one of the busiest warehousing and distribution clusters in the country.
Positioned off Faraday Avenue at the entrance to the park, the eHGV charging hub is intended to serve both on-site tenants and fleets operating through the wider area.
26 ultra-rapid chargers with future MCS capability
The site will allow 26 electric HGVs to charge simultaneously using ultra-rapid chargers. Selected units will include Megawatt Charging System capability, providing future-ready ultra high-power charging as vehicle technology develops.
The layout has been designed with operational flexibility in mind. The facility will feature:
- Eight truck-and-trailer bays
- Ten tractor-only bays
- A welfare cabin for drivers
- Fifteen park-and-drive car spaces
By combining high-power infrastructure with shared grid capacity, Fleete aims to reduce the cost and complexity of depot-based electrification for individual operators.
Limited grid availability and protracted connection timelines remain major barriers to commercial fleet electrification. Shared infrastructure, particularly at large logistics parks, offers one route to spreading connection costs and accelerating deployment.
Tackling infrastructure constraints
Chris Morrison, CEO of Fleete Group, said the Hams Hall development reflects the scale of infrastructure now required to support electric HGV adoption.
“Securing planning consent for our charging hub at Hams Hall reflects our intent to support the infrastructure required for largescale fleet electrification at a nationally significant logistics centre,” he said.
“Hams Hall represents a strategically important opportunity within our growing network of shared charging sites. Through this network, we’re helping address infrastructure costs and connection challenges, making the transition to zero emission logistics faster, more practical and more achievable for fleet operators.”
Fleete oversees the full design, planning and operation of each eHGV charging hub in its network. Sites are supported by energy management systems and 24/7 operational monitoring to balance demand and maintain supply reliability.
As electric HGV uptake continues to grow, strategically located shared infrastructure such as the Hams Hall eHGV charging hub is likely to play a defining role. For operators unable to secure timely depot connections, access to high-power shared facilities may become less of an option and more of a necessity.
