Food producer Cranswick has taken a major step in reducing transport emissions by rolling out Sunswap’s solar-and-battery-powered refrigeration units across its UK fleet.
The Preston-based deployment sees Cranswick integrating Sunswap’s Endurance units into temperature-controlled transport for meat deliveries, replacing diesel and HVO-powered alternatives.
Big savings in cost and carbon
Cranswick’s trials of the Endurance units showed clear benefits. Compared to diesel refrigeration, the new system reduced running costs by 81%, with total cost savings of 43%. Even when benchmarked against HVO fuel – a cleaner-burning alternative to diesel – Sunswap’s units still came out ahead, cutting both costs and harmful emissions such as NOx and particulate matter.
Transport refrigeration is a known emissions hotspot. Diesel TRUs are often overlooked in decarbonisation efforts, despite burning thousands of litres of fuel annually. Sunswap’s technology removes this issue entirely, replacing diesel with a fully battery and solar-powered system.
Michael Lowe, CEO at Sunswap, said:
“Cranswick didn’t just compare us to standard diesel. They tested us against HVO and found the operational benefits compelling. Even those already investing in cleaner fuels can achieve breakthrough improvements with purpose-built electric refrigeration.”
Supporting sustainability commitments
Cranswick’s adoption of the system aligns with its “Second Nature” sustainability strategy and commitment to Science Based Targets.
“Integrating Sunswap’s zero-emission refrigeration aligns perfectly with our commitments,” said Gary Hewson, Transport Manager at Cranswick.
“Beyond the emissions reduction, the cost savings and performance reliability made this a sound business decision.”
The units will be used to deliver meat products from Cranswick’s sites to UK retailers, ensuring consistent temperature control while eliminating refrigeration emissions.
More operators joining in
Cranswick joins a growing number of UK food producers, logistics providers and retailers turning to Sunswap’s electric refrigeration systems as part of fleet decarbonisation strategies.
The Endurance unit, manufactured at Sunswap’s facility in Leatherhead, Surrey, combines advanced battery packs with solar charging, offering operators an immediate solution to reduce carbon output and operating costs.
