MAN has opened its first CO2-neutral commercial vehicle plant to push forward its aim of cutting CO2 emissions by 25 per cent by 2020 compared with 2008 figures. Among a range of energy-efficient systems, the new plant – located in Pinetown, South Africa – includes an oversize photovoltaic system with solar panels on 6300 m2 of the production hall roofs, which MAN said can generate up to 810,000 kWh per year and supplies enough environmentally friendly energy to leave a surplus that is fed into the local power grid. MAN said this measure alone will reduce its CO2 emissions in production by 860 tonnes per year.
